- The bold rectangular surrounding the frame logo exemplifies the well defined framework with in which CARE operates.
- Each stroke that makes the pedestal identifies the multi-disciplinary teams working at CARE.
- The Foundation under the field depicts a level field for all, and talks about CARE’s transparent dealings.
- On top of the towering pedestal, the figure lending a helping hand signifies a professional standing on excellence, while a figure he’s helping up represents a patient down with disease.
- The color purple represents nobility and spirituality. And hence, it brings about certain spiritual calmness to those who come in contact with it.

A movement called ‘CARE’ took birth in the year 1997, when Padmashri Dr. B. Soma Raju led a team of medical professionals to set up the first CARE Hospital. It opened a new chapter in the history of health care. The driving force of Compassion, Concern, Care, coupled with single minded objective - the recovery of the patient is been the fountainhead of inspiration. Today, within a span of 10 years, CARE has emerged as the leading name in health care and has earned a reputation for humanitarian and self less service. But, most importantly, CARE has the undivided faith of millions.
The origins of CARE can be traced to 1983 when a team of cardiologists, led by Padmashri Dr. B Soma Raju, set up a synergy for professional excellence in the cardiology department of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. The idea was to propel the cardiology department into one of the top centers in the country. The synergy gave momentum to the purpose and accelerated the birth of CARE 13 years later. The team collaborated with scientists to make healthcare affordable through the development of indigenous medical technologies. It was the development of India’s first coronary stent (Kalam-Raju stent) that inspired the creation of CARE Hospital in 1997 to nurture a model that makes quality medical care affordable and accessible.
At the outset, CARE earned accolades and appreciation from one and all for its expertise in heart care. It continues to set new benchmarks not only in heart care, but also expanded its horizons by becoming a leading Multi-specialty Health Care Provider. Through the years, CARE has emerged as:

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Dear Friends,
A dream to offer world-class services to the general masses of our country, where the need for healthcare is the greatest but access to quality health care the least… that is what got us into business about a decade ago.
In the eighties, we were a group of 10 cardiologists working together at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). By bringing together a dedicated and motivated group of young professionals, we developed the concept of collaborative tea, working and demonstrated that modern medicine, in totality, could be practiced only through organized teams. This was successively proved when within a very short span of time the department at NIMS was propelled into the top league of the cardiac healthcare space with in India.
Interestingly, in our success lay our frustration; we recognized that the benefit of our cutting-edge research extended only to a privileged community; the majority of patients could scarcely afford to avail of the advancements in the medical science achieved by some of their own countrymen. This realization laid the foundation of one of the components of our mission – to make modern medicine affordable and accessible to all.
Philosophy
We might have continued our way – working in small pockets, making intermittent improvements, presenting papers at international conventions but barely altering the status quo of the India’s significant under-privileged in medical care – had it not been for Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (the former president of India and then Principal Scientific advisor of the Government of India) who inspired us with a few simple lines:
Develop indigenous technology. Reduce medical costs. Reach medical service to all.
Dr. Kalam walked his talk; he partnered with us to form the Society of Biomedical Technology in 1993 that developed the Kalam-Raju stent, India’s first coronary stent; more importantly, he inspired us to extend our commitment to the community by enlisting the support of 20 – like minded cardiologists, pooling our savings and creating a full fledged medical facility in 1997. Relevantly, we called it Quality CARE Hospital.
At the very outset, we resolved that CARE Hospital would not just be another medical facility.
- It would not be created to serve the rich but it would address all sections of the community.
- It would not charge all community sections in the same way but would price its services in line with the paying capacity of the patient.
- It would not turn away a patient simply because the patient could not afford our services but would channelize its own social responsibilities and the goodwill of the community to fund such needy people.
- It would not just provide the usual medical attention but would provide a world-class service to all.
Professional
At CARE, one of our most effective differentiators is the reconciliation of clinical and corporate governance.
As a part of our clinical governance, we defined our core purpose: ‘To practice medicine as it should be’, implying that we will always provide medical care with a human face, we will provide relief to our patients and aim to increase their longevity and will do all this through a transparency of process and practice.
As a part of our corporate governance, we resolved that we would run our business as trustees of shareholder interest. We would constitute a Board would board with a fair mix of working and independent directors, we would report our profits faithfully, we would abide by the laws of the land in the various locations of our presence and we would strive to enhance stakeholder value in a responsibly sustainable way.
Progress
If there is one thing that we have demonstrated over the last ten years at CARE, it is that a good conscience can translate into good business.
Despite altruistic ideals and a ‘soft’ business model, CARE has grown aggressively.
- We started as a single – Speciality cardiac hospital; we are a multi-Speciality hospital chain with eleven hospitals today.
- We started with 100 beds; we have a capacity of over 1,000 beds today.
- We started with 20 doctors and 200 support professionals; we have more than 200 doctors and 3,000 support professionals working with is today.
- We treated 1,182 patients in the year of our launch and currently reached the target of treating more than 26,095 patients this year.
Going forward, we intend to continue investing our resources ti improve the accessibility of quality of health care and make it more affordable to the general masses. We intend to do this through a self sufficient business model that will generate value for all our stakeholders – our patients, shareholders, associates, employees and the community at large.

PERSONNAL GROWTH RATE
- Nearly 11.12% of all our employees comprise of doctors with nearly 4.72% of them being specialists and 3.64% of our non-medical staff.
- Even as employee cost increased, revenues per employee improved from Rs. 7.08 lakh to Rs. 8.93 lakh in 2005-2006, indicating an over all increase in productivity.

The following section details the research undertaken by CARE and the investment made toward the success of the researches undertaken
- There are currently 74 studies being carried out under the ACRC, of which 16 are international studies.
- At CARE clinical research is carried out by ‘The Academic Cell and Research Centre (ACRC)’, the clinical unit of CARE foundation that was started in July 1999 under the guidance of CARE Foundation and CARE Hospital to promote research in various areas like in house drug trials in house and international projects.
- We have invested RS. 137.85 Crore in equipment across five years with a singular objective: make medical care effective and affordable.
- CARE supported the effort to make cardiac care increasingly affordable through support of the development of India’s first indigenous catheterization laboratory in 2002. As a result, the new catheterization laboratory was successful in making angiograms available to patients at only a fraction of the erstwhile cost.

CARE has accomplished growth in many facets but it’s the growth in the number of patients that stands testimony to our widening network of operations. The trust the people have placed in us has further motivated us in furthering our contribution to the patient care
- 18% growth in OP registration to 31523 lakh in 2005-06
- 11% growth in IP admissions to 3486 lakh in 2005-06
- 11.09% increase in the number of surgeries performed in 2005-06.
- A 500 basis point increase in the average occupancy to about 70% in 2005-06.
- Specialists number increased from 20 to 100.
- Clinical and procedural outcomes on par with US Norms.
- Control the cost components of patient care such as drugs disposables and consumables account for nearly 50% of the total expenses, the highest cost element in a hospital – to provide a superior value to patients.
- Provide quality low medical care has resulted in increase in patients preferring CARE. This fact is reflected in the consistent growth in the bypass surgeries, growing at a CAGR of 30% over the last nine year
