PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
Physician Assistants (PAs) provide healthcare services under the supervision of physicians. They should not be confused with medical assistants, who perform routine clinical and clerical tasks. PAs are formally trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services, as delegated by a physician. Working as members of the healthcare team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x rays, and make diagnoses.

AIM OF THE COURSE
CARE Foundation, as a part of its academic activities started the Physician Assistants (PA) program in 2003 with the following aim:

Identify for admission, individuals with the pre-requisite academic, interpersonal skills and maturity necessary for Physician Assistant (PA) education who have career interests that meet the underserved primary care along with other specialty practices.

Educate the identified individuals as Physician Assistants for supervised practice of medicine in primary care and other specialties.

Serve as a resource to the people, community, clinicians and health care system.
Facilitate and participate in research areas of clinical medicine, healthcare delivery and education.

AFFILIATIONS (UNIVERSITY NAMES AND DESCRIPTION)
CARE Foundation and CARE Hospital have collaborated with Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU), a premier State Open University in Kolkatta, West Bengal, India established by West Bengal Act (XIX) of 1997 and recognised by University Grants Commission

DURATION
The whole PA program is structured for 3 years, which includes a one-year internship.

The first two years consists of two semesters of five months each and one month for theoretical and practical assessment of the student.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates should have a minimum qualification of a Bachelors degree in any discipline. However, preference will be given to Science graduates. Qualification in the medical field will be an added advantage.

COURSE OVERVIEW
A PA must attend a specialized medical training program associated with a medical organization that includes classroom studies and clinical experience. A certificate is awarded after the completion of the course. Having a prior healthcare experience will be an additional qualification to get enrolled into the program.

COURSE CURRICULUM
The 3 year course is spread out in 3 years. The first two years consist of 2 semesters each. Each semester has 5 months. The last year is internship

SPECIALTY SYLLABUS (II YEAR)

Semester I
This semester covers various disorders, diagnostic procedures and pre-requirement for undergoing a test.

Semester II
This semester covers all the pathological conditions and other special procedures.

INTERNSHIP (III YEAR)
During the internship period of one year, the candidate should get involved in at least one research project and assist the consultant in his/her research area.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS
The students passing out of the PA program have various options and many job prospects apart from joining CARE.

OPTING FOR CARE
There are very few places in India that offer a course such as Physician’s Assistant. CARE is one such organization that provides this course and excellently trains its students in the course. The students passing this course can become able assistants to the doctors. This course is the complete to provide all the required training such as:

Evaluation:
Initially approach a patient of any age group in any setting to elicit a detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physical examination, delineate problems and record a present data.

Monitoring:
Assist the Physician in conduction rounds in acute and long-term in-patient care settings, develop and implement patient management plans, record progress notes, and assist in the provision of continuity of care in office based and the other ambulatory care settings.

Diagnostic:
Perform and /or interpret at least to the point of recognizing deviations from the norm, common laboratory, radiological, and cardiographic and other diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiological processes.

Therapeutics:
Perform routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, and wound care management, manage simple conditions produced by infection or trauma and assist in the management of more complex illness and injury, which may include assisting surgeons in operations and taking initiative in performing evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.

Counselling:
Instruct and counsel patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance and disease prevention.

Referral:
Facilitate referral of patients to other medical or surgical specialties when appropriate. 

An all-round development as Physician’s Assistant is possible with this course offered by CARE.

The Annual Day function of Physician Assistant’s course was held on
4th September, 2005 at Care Hospital, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
