Proper nutrition is very important in these early years of development. Good nutrition can optimize health. Cholesterol levels can be lowered by consuming more soluble fiber; osteoporosis risk is decreased by eating foods high in calcium; and cancer risks are decreased by eating more fruits and vegetables. Children usually eat when they are hungry and naturally stop when they are full. Establishing good eating habits at an early age can help get them to make wise choices about what they eat. Offering them good nutritious snacks will most likely result in them asking for such good foods for a snack or meal.

The recommended daily intake (a balanced diet) provides adequate protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients. Here are the six food groups and recommended daily servings:

• Bread, cereal, rice, and pasta, 6-11 servings
• Vegetables, 3-5 servings
• Fruits, 2-4 servings
• Meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts, 2-3 servings
• Milk, yogurt, and cheese, 2-3 servings
• Fats, oils, and sweets, use sparingly

What you can do:

• Provide 3 balanced meals a day plus 1-2 goods snacks
• Avoid skipping meals, especially breakfast
• Offer and encourage drinking plenty of water every day
• Avoid processed foods. They contain high amounts of salt (sodium) and fat
