A workshop on “Risk Management in Clinical Laboratories” was organised by the Laboratory Medicine Department, CARE Nampally in association with BIO-RAD Laboratories India on 24 April. Faculty for the workshop included Dr Anjana Tiwari, HoD, Biochemistry, Nampally; Dr A S Kanagasabhapathy, former Prof and Head of Clinical Biochemistry, CMC, Vellore; Dr Shanti Naidu, HoD, Laboratory Medicine, Banjara; Dr Chirantan Bose, Laboratory Director, AM Path, Citizens Hospitals and Dr Jhansi Vani, HOD, Microbiology, Banjara. Risk management is the process that helps to identify problems, analyses them and creates an action plan to avoid or manage them. The workshop theme was to evaluate and quantify the impact of work processes and potential failures on examination results as they affect patient safety, diagnosis and treatment. It emphasized creating a process map and examining it for potential errors. Risk priority number (RPN) should be used as a quality indicator for monitoring the quality of results generated in the laboratory. The workshop was attended by quality managers and heads of laboratory medicine from other hospitals and institutions as well.
