A Flight to the Heart – Mohammed Abdullah’s heartwarming story
CARE Hospitals at Hyderabad and Vizag came together to give a new lease of life to Mohammed Abdullah (31), resident of Guntur district. Abdullah was a heart failure patient of Dr Rajeev Menon, CMS at CARE Banjara. He could not lie flat because of breathlessness and had been implanted with a Defibrillatory Pacemaker by Dr C Narasimhan, Senior Cardiologist. He was posted for a heart transplant and was on the waiting list since 2015.
Suddenly, the family of a brain dead patient in Visakhapatnam came forward to donate his organs. The heart was in Vizag and the patient in Hyderabad! It was crucial to have the heart transplant surgery performed within a few hours of harvesting the heart. Dr Rajeev Menon took the initiative and decided to perform the heart transplant in Vizag itself.
Speaking to senior people in the State Government, with the cooperation of several CARE units, a charteredflight was requisitioned to airlift Abdullah to Vizag on 21st March. Cardiologist Dr Ramasubrahmanyam accompanied the patient. With all arrangements overseen by Dr T Mohan S Maharaj, Medical Director, Vizag a team of surgeons, Dr Karunakara Padhy, Dr P V Satyanarayana, Dr G Rama Subramanyam, Dr Sanjeeb Rao, Dr M Krishan and Dr S B R Narasimhan, performed the surgery, along with Dr Maharaj, Dr S Anooradha and Dr Jagannath giving anesthetic support while A Kanaka Durga and Balaram Mahapatro carried out the perfusion. The patient was discharged on 2nd April.
