World Health Day 2018
“Health for all,” is the theme of World Health Day this year, and the goal is to encourage the world to work towards providing universal health coverage for people everywhere. In the words of the Director-General of WHO, “No one should have to choose between death and financial hardship. No one should have to choose between buying medicine and buying food.”
This year at CARE, we’re spending the month of April focusing on cardiac health, the battle against cancer, and the importance of immunization.
What is World Health Day?
World Health Day is observed every year on the 7th of April under the sponsorship of World Health Organization (WHO). It is a global awareness day and is one of the eight global health campaigns marked by WHO. The first World Health Assembly was held in the year 1948 where it was decided that every year, the organization will make an attempt to draw worldwide attention to global health.
What does World Health Day do?
The WHO organizes local, regional and international events every year related to the theme. It also receives acknowledgement from various government and non-governmental organizations for showing an interest in public health issues. Activities are organized and highlighted with the help of media reports as well.
What does World Health Day aim to do in 2018?
World Health Day aims to inspire, guide and motivate UHC (Universal Health Care) stakeholders.
- Inspire- Transform the health of the nation, take a look at the challenges as something ambitious and exciting and inspire people to become a part of the challenge.
- Motivate- Share examples of how countries have already progressed and encourage more countries to find their own way.
- Guide- Provide tools for structured policy dialogue on how the UHC can be advanced domestically.
What does “universal health coverage” mean?
UHC means that all communities and people will receive necessary and vital health services without having to deal with financial difficulties. UHC also aims to ensure that the quality of service provided is up to a certain standard and is beneficial for those who receive them.
