When do you generally consult a neurologist?

If you suffer from daily/chronic headaches, feel nauseous on most days, have tingling or feeling of numbness and weakness in your limbs, burning or pricking sensation or loss of sensation, suffer from memory loss/disturbances, sleep disturbances, speech and swallowing disturbances, chronic back and neck pain, etc. If you notice abnormal movements of your limbs, facial deviation, or suffer seizures, you should immediately see and consult a neurologist.

What is epilepsy? What are its main causes?

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that causes unprovoked, recurrent seizures, i.e., a sudden rush of electrical activity in the brain leading to strange sensations, emotions, and physical behavior sometimes also accompanied by convulsions, muscle spasms, and/or loss of consciousness.
Unfortunately, in 6 out of 10 people with epilepsy, the exact cause cannot be determined. However, the following can be the possible causes:
Stroke is a leading cause of epilepsy in people over the age of 35
Scarring on the brain after a brain injury
Very high fever or any serious illness
Lack of oxygen to the brain
Tumor or cyst in the brain
Severe or traumatic brain injury
Prenatal injury, brain malformation, or lack of oxygen at birth
Genetic or developmental disorders or neurological diseases

How do I prepare for a visit to a neurologist?

Before you go for the consultation with a neurologist, you need to consider the following:
Take note of all your symptoms and other health information like previous illnesses, ongoing medications, family history of any disease, allergies, etc.
Compile and carry all your previous health reports along with previous doctor(s) diagnoses, prescriptions, etc.
Have a basic list of questions prepared to ask your neurologist to clear any confusion.
It is advisable that you are accompanied by a family member or a friend during your visit to the neurologist.
