At CARE Hospitals, we have oncologists who come with years of experience in treating cancer patients using radiation therapy and thus, such treatments are done under strict supervision.
Treatment of breast cancer depends on the type of cancer, location and size of the tumour, and how much is it has spread. Treatment typically involves partial or complete surgical removal of breast tissue, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone replacement therapy. The type of surgery recommended by the doctor will depend on the stage and growth of the cancer.
Lumpectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove cancer cells from the
breast. The procedure involves removing cancerous cells and a small margin of healthy breast
tissue unlike mastectomy (surgical removal of entire breast). It is usually used to treat
early stage cancer and is a form of breast-conserving surgery.

FAQ's
In cancer, what do the terms 'benign' & 'malignant' mean?
A tumor may be diagnosed as benign or malignant. A benign tumor is not cancerous as it does not multiply or spread and usually can be easily removed without the possibility of recurrence. On the other hand, a malignant tumor is cancerous. A malignant tumor never stops growing and can spread to other parts of the body in a haphazard and uncontrolled way through the blood or lymph system, forming lumps or tumors in the body.
What causes cancer?
Even after millions of researches and studies, the definite causes of cancer remain fairly unknown. However, there are certain substances, known as carcinogens, that increase the chances of cancer in people. For example, people who smoke or chew tobacco are more prone to mouth, throat and lung cancer. Continued irritation of tissues can also lead to cancer. Pollution, preserved/packaged food, smoked and junk food are also known to put people on high risk of developing various kinds of cancer. Even certain viruses can cause cancer (EBV, Hepatitis B, HPV). Asbestos, arsenic, pitch, tar, ultraviolet rays are also amongst other known causes for cancer.
What is Chemotherapy used for? How does Chemotherapy work?
Chemotherapy is primarily given to shrink the size of tumor(s), slow down the cancer’s growth, to keep the cancer from spreading to other areas, relieve diseases related symptoms, and prolong the patient’s survival. It is one of the most effective ways of treating many different types of cancer. The underlying principle of chemotherapy is to kill the cancer by treating them with chemicals that interfere with the process of cell division. However, in the process, the healthy cells are also harmed, especially those that divide quickly. Harm to healthy cells is what causes side effects like loss of hair, blackening of nails, etc. Usually, these cells repair themselves after chemotherapy.
What are the major treatments for Cancer?
The most common treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Other options include targeted therapy, immunotherapy, laser, hormonal therapy, and others.
