A surgical procedure in which a medical device which is responsible for sending the electrical signals to the brain and regulating bodily movements is implanted in the body of the patient in-focus is called Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery. It is basically performed to aid patients who are suffering from any sort of movement disorders with aggravating symptoms such as tremors, stiffness etc.
If someone has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for over 5 years and have worsening symptoms including tremors, stiffness and troublewalking, he or she may opt for DBS surgery. For most of the Parkinson’s disease patients, the surgery works pretty well.
During DBS surgery for Parkinson’s, your surgeon will insert a device near your chest area which can send electrical signals to your brain. These signals are basically used to impede the nerve signals that are responsible for Parkinson’s.
The setting of the device can be changed, as and when required.

During DBS surgery, you will undergo two types of procedures.
Even after the DBS surgery, you need to take your Parkinson’s medication. Once the inflammation in your brain goes away, the device is programmed. The programming doesn’t happen at once. While some patients may require as long as six months to get their programming right, a few others may take less time than this.
The patient suffering from epilepsy whose seizures couldn’t be controlled with medication can opt for DBS surgery. Moreover, patients who can’t have epilepsy surgery to remove the part of the brain that is responsible for causing seizures can also go for DBS surgery.
A battery-driven device known as neuro-stimulator is placed in the body of the patient. It sends signals to the Anterior Nucleus of the Thalamus (ANT) using electrodes. This part of the brain is responsible for causing seizures.
The procedure for the DBS surgery remains the same in both Parkinson’s and Epilepsy. Once the device is placed and programmed, the epilepsy patients can use the programmer to control their seizure if a simple focal seizure has just happened to them.
