Special Training
  • I spent 5 years of my haematology training programme on north west deanery rotation. Time spent at the Manchester Haemophilia Centre and Thrombosis allowed me to develop confidence in treating a wide range of problems relating to bleeding disorders in patients of all ages. This involved emergency management and longterm care. In addition the rotation provided direct experience of complex treatments decisions including resource management of factor replacement, immune tolerance regimes ,and the use of bypassing agents for patients with inhibitors.
  • Training in Manchester also provided excellent practical experience in the management of haematological malignancies. I spent 12 months as the registrar for the dedicated lymphoma service and a further 15 months with the bone marrow transplant(BMT) team. The lymphoma service allowed exposure to all aspects of patient care including high dose therapy.
  • The busy BMT rotation provided good training in autologous and allogenic transplantation, including full and reduced intensity grafts involving either sibling or unrelated donors. Twice weekly transplant outpatient clinics also allowed me to develop confidence in managing post transplant complications including CMV reactivation and graft versus host disease.
  • I attended haemoglobinopathy clinics for adult patients and also managed in patients with sickle crises . Patients were also seen for exchange transfusions prior to complex elective surgery.
  • Exposure to paediatric haematology was gained through dedicated rotation at the childrens hospital in Manchester.I was involved with the management of children with malignant and non-malignant diseases. Much of the work on the the unit involved treating patients on national leukemia trial protocols.
