WHY BARIATRIC SURGERY?

Scientific evidence proves that excess weight leads to many health problems along with darkening the outlook on life. It’s good to know them but with a hope that the cure is just round the corner.

Type 2 Diabetes

People with obesity develop resistance to which regulates blood sugar level. This can cause serious damage to various organs in the body.

Osteoarthritis of Weight-bearing Joints

The additional weight placed on joints, particularly knees and hips, results in rapid wearing out of these joints, along with pain caused by inflammation.

High Blood Pressure/ Heart Disease

Excess body weight overburdens the heart, leading to hypertension that may cause strokes (brain hemorrhage), heart and kidney damage.

Gastroesophageal Reflux/ Heartburn:

Obese people are susceptible to acid escaping into the esophagus through a weak or overloaded valve at the top of the stomach.

Sleep Apnea/ Respiratory Problems

During sleep, soft tissue blocks the airway and breathing repeatedly stops in obese persons, causing loss of sleep at night and drowsiness/ headache in daytime.

Depression

Repeated failure with dieting, disapproval from family and friends and constant struggle with fat puts immense mental strain pushing patients into depression.

Fatty Liver or Hepatic Lipidosis (Steatosis)

Fatty liver is the accumulation of fat in liver cells. Greater the percentage of fat in liver, higher is the risk of developing liver inflammation, fibrosis or cirrhosis. Others Other problems include swollen legs/ skin ulcers, urinary stress incontinence, menstrual irregularities, lower extremity venous stasis, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), dyslipidemia (lipid metabolism abnormalities), pulmonary embolus and cancer.

COSMETIC WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY - ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTROPLASTY OR ESG

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) uses a tube with a camera attached (Endoscope) which is inserted orally down a patient’s throat) as opposed to making incisions to perform the surgery. ESG works by partitioning the stomach into a slowly emptying upper part and a normally functioning lower part. This will reduce the gastric volume of the stomach by up to 50 – 60% as well as alter the way that the stomach functions. ESG avoids removal of the stomach. Often patients can leave hospital on the same day following ESG

DIABETES SURGERY

There are various bariatric procedures that help is remission of diabetes like gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass or ileal interposition. Different procedure is chosen for different individual. These procedures reduce capacity to eat, bypass a part of the intestine and re-arrange it to cause diabetes resolution. During the surgery a hormone called glp-1 is secreted in huge quantity, which counters resistance of diabetes.

WHO CAN UNDERGO DIABETES SURGERY?

As per international guidelines, all those who have uncontrolled diabetes, despite all medical measures, and have a BMI greater than 28, can undergo this treatment. Patients with a great pancreatic reserve benefit the most.
