What is Total Colectomy? The colon or large intestine forms the last part of the digestive system after the small bowel and it ends with the rectum and the anus. Laparoscopic Total Colectomy involves the removal of the whole colon upto rectum Total Colectomy is done to treat: Colon Cancer Ulcerative colitis Crohn's disease Colon Polyps Diverticulitis Procedure of Total Colectomy A breathing tube is placed in the throat Several small incisions are made near belly button and the abdomen Abdomen is inflated with Carbon Dioxide Gas to provide a working space and ports are placed Laparoscope is inserted to get a magnified view of the patient's internal organs on a television monitor Fine instruments are then passed into the abdomen through the ports The whole colon is removed through an incision made above the pubic bone The end of small intestine is attached to the rectum The laparoscope and other instruments are removed The tiny incisions are closed and covered with small bandages In some cases, stoma may be needed Stoma is a small opening in the abdomen where a part of the intestine is brought to the skin This opening allows for stool to empty into a collection bag
