Dr.Tapan K. Dash, Clinical Director and Head of Department – Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, and a team of surgeons performed a complex Open-Heart surgery on a 16-day old baby in 4 hours on a 16-day new-born that took 30 straight hours in an ambulance to reach Hyderabad amidst lockdown
“The baby was born with a disease called transposition of great arteries with interruption of the aorta and single coronary artery [instead of two] supplying to the heart. In this condition, the blue blood coming to the heart was going back to the body because of reversal of heart structures and there was no connection of heart to the whole body” explains Dr. Prashant Patil, Senior Consultant Interventional Pediatric Cardiologist, CARE Hospitals.
“The surgery was a complicated one and we not only had to connect the heart to original structures but also the whole body.
The one origin of the artery supplying to heart added to the complexity of the procedure.” Said, Dr. Tapan
The whole surgery was done free of cost and the newborn is healthy and fully recovered.
