Consult Super-Specialist Doctors at CARE Hospitals
9 April 2026
More than 2,000 patients suffering from hearing loss have regained hearing through advanced micro ear surgery (Stapedotomy) at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, with ENT specialist Dr. N. Vishnu Swaroop Reddy leading the high-volume surgical programme that has addressed both routine and complex cases.
The milestone highlights the growing role of specialised micro ear surgery in treating conductive hearing loss, particularly in patients with Otosclerosis, an often-underdiagnosed condition.
Doctors note that many patients delay seeking treatment, often adapting to hearing loss over the years and presenting only after significant deterioration or when both ears are affected.
Otosclerosis leads to progressive fixation of the stapes bone in the middle ear, resulting in gradual hearing loss. It can affect individuals from as young as 8–10 years to the elderly and is more prevalent in women, with progression sometimes worsening during pregnancy. Over time, the condition can impact both ears, affecting communication and everyday life.
The surgical series also includes children with congenital conductive hearing loss, patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and other rare causes, reflecting the complexity and range of cases managed at the hospital.
Stapedotomy is a highly delicate microscopic procedure in which the immobilised stapes—the smallest bone in the human body—is replaced with a precision micro-prosthesis to restore sound transmission. In many cases, patients experience noticeable improvement in hearing immediately after the procedure, particularly when performed under local anaesthesia, helping them avoid long-term dependence on hearing aids.
Dr. Reddy’s first 1,000 surgeries were presented at the Asia Oceania Congress of ENT Surgeons in 2019 and later published in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology (Cambridge, UK) in 2021. The study is among the largest documented stapedotomy series from India, ranks among leading international series, and reports high success rates.
Following this international recognition, CARE Hospitals has seen patients travelling from across India and overseas, contributing to another 1,000-plus surgeries over the past six years.
Reflecting on the milestone, Dr. Reddy said, “Many patients seek help only after the second ear is affected, having silently adapted to hearing loss for years. Awareness is critical—Otosclerosis is treatable, and hearing can be restored with timely intervention. Hearing loss quietly erodes confidence, dignity, and human connection. The true milestone is not the number of surgeries, but the moment a patient hears clearly again, often after years of silence.”
He added, “Hearing loss is not permanent in many cases—it is treatable and reversible.”
Congratulating Dr. Reddy, Mr. Abhinav Joshi, Hospital Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, said the milestone underscores the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
