The sweltering hot Indian summers have finally arrived. In this weather, we love to indulge in cool, aerated beverages. Staying hydrated in summer is also extremely essential because the heat and humidity can cause excessive sweating, leading to fluid loss. But it must be known that such drinks can be loaded with sugar, and be extremely unhealthy in the long run.
“Dehydration can lead to several health problems such as heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration-induced headaches. It can also cause low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and dizziness,” said Dr G Sushma – Consultant – Clinical Dietician, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
But worry not, dietician Lovneet Batra recently shared some summer coolers that are tasty, healthy, and will help “ refresh and replenish” your body without any added calories.
Sattu water: Sattu is high in iron, manganese, and magnesium and low in sodium, giving rapid energy as well as acting as a cooling agent. It is good for the intestines since it contains a lot of insoluble fibre. It also regulates gas, constipation, and acidity, making it an ideal summer cooler.
“Sattu is made from roasted gram flour, which has a cooling effect on the body. It also contains several essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, calcium, iron, and magnesium, which make it a healthy drink. Sattu is also known to aid digestion and reduce acidity,” says Dr Sushma.
Buttermilk: Made from yoghurt with added salt and spices, buttermilk is instrumental in reducing body heat and preventing dehydration. It is full of electrolytes and is one of the best drinks to fight against the heat and loss of water from the body. Buttermilk also helps deal with summer-related issues, such as prickly heat and general uneasiness.
Praising buttermilk, Dr Sushma said, “It is low in calories and high in nutrients, such as calcium and potassium. It also contains probiotics, which aid digestion and boost immunity. Buttermilk is known to reduce acidity, improve gut health, and prevent dehydration”.
Cucumber mint juice: Cucumber mint juice is an excellent and refreshing drink. It can reduce the likelihood of heat stroke with its cooling ability.
“Cucumber mint juice is low in calories and high in water content. It is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which makes it a healthy drink. Cucumber mint juice is known to improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and aid in weight loss,” shares Dr Sushma.
Coconut water: Coconut water is nature’s gift to mankind as it is an excellent hydrator. The basic ion composition of coconut can replenish the electrolyte of the human body excreted through sweat such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The cooling effect works miracles on our digestive system and brings down irritation on the stomach lining.
“Coconut water is rich in electrolytes, such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium, which are essential for maintaining proper fluid balance in the body. It is also low in calories and high in antioxidants, which makes it a healthy drink. Coconut water is known to improve digestion, boost hydration, and prevent kidney stones.”
“However, it is important to keep a few things in mind while consuming summer coolers. One should avoid consuming sugary drinks as they can lead to weight gain and dehydration. It is also important to consume drinks in moderation and avoid overhydration. One should also ensure that they are consuming clean and hygienic drinks to prevent any infections. Additionally, it is essential to stay hydrated by consuming water and other healthy fluids throughout the day,” concluded Dr Sushma.
