Salt And Sarson (Mustard Oil): Does The Combination Really Help Whiten Teeth?

Poor dental hygiene, unhealthy dietary habits, and tobacco use are some of the most common causes of tooth discolouration or yellow teeth. To remove stains, people resort to different methods and strategies involving both professional expertise and natural remedies.

As far as at-home treatment is concerned, the salt and mustard oil combination is a widely applied technique for teeth-whitening. But is it really effective, or does it do more harm than good? We spoke to Dr Navatha, Senior Consultant-Maxillofacial Surgeon, CARE Hospitals, HITEC City, Hyderabad, to get some answers.

Natural remedies like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or activated charcoal are said to help with teeth whitening. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry, toothpaste containing baking soda and peroxide helped remove tooth stains and whiten teeth in people who used the product.

Another review published in the Journal of the American Dental Association concluded with similar results, suggesting that baking soda-rich toothpaste helps whiten teeth.

While some research claims that oil pulling may help reduce plaque formation on teeth, there is still no clear evidence to suggest that it can help whiten teeth.

Experts continue to recommend seeking professional or dentist’s help, who can whiten teeth using bleaching agents. You can also use at-home whitening kits under dentist supervision, which include whitening strips or gels.

Does The Combination Of Salt And Mustard Oil Help Whiten Teeth?

For centuries, salt and mustard oil have been used for teeth and gum care. However, there is no solid evidence that supports the benefits of the ingredients.

Although salt is known for its abrasive characteristics and mustard oil for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, all of which are said to remove dental stains, reduce plaque buildup on teeth, and prevent gum inflammation and bleeding, Dr Navatha debunks these claims as myths.

She said, “The abrasive action of salt cannot effectively help remove stains, but rather can do more damage to the tooth enamel," adding that overusing this combination may lead to enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity.

Additionally, the doctor warned against allergic reactions in people who are allergic to mustard oil.

Oral-Care Habits To Follow

While certain home remedies may work for some individuals, it is best to practice healthy oral habits. These include:

  • Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste; brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably after meals.
  • Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth where your toothbrush can't reach.
  • Use an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in your mouth and strengthen your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleanings.
  • Eat a balanced diet that's low in sugary and acidic foods.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist and help wash away food particles and bacteria.
  • Quit smoking and avoid excessive alcohol consumption.

Conclusion

The combination of salt and mustard oil is an age-old remedy to strengthen and whiten teeth. However, getting professional guidance on maintaining dental health and hygiene is of utmost importance. It is also crucial to follow necessary oral care habits to reduce the risk of dental problems and gum diseases.
