Rare Redo Bypass Surgery performed using BIMA Bypass Surgery

In a rare scenario a patient needing a second bypass surgery was successfully operated on using a BIMA (Bilateral Internal Mammary Artery) Bypass Surgery on the beating heart. The surgery was done last week by renowned Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar, Director Cardiac Surgery at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills Hyderabad. Mr. Rasiklal Shanthilal Kothari 63 years old a resident of Aurangabad in Maharastra had his first bypass surgery 6 years back using veins from the legs. He was doing well for a few years and later started experiencing severe chest pain.

As his condition worsened, his family took him to one of the best hospitals in Mumbai where the angiography confirmed that he had developed 90% left main coronary artery disease and 100% right coronary artery disease. Dr. Bhatnagar and his team did 3 grafts using only BIMA for this Redo bypass surgery. The surgery was done on the beating heart while the heart kept pumping blood with no heart-lung machine.

Also, as it was BIMA Redo bypass surgery, the patient had no cuts on the arms or legs. “ This is one of its kind surgery where BIMA was used for a redo bypass surgery. BIMA, when used in bypass surgery, has proven to be working in 90% of patients even after 20 years. It has proven to be more effective with long-term results and is also cosmetically better with less pain.”

Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar, Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, and a renowned BIMA (Bilateral Internal Mammary Artery) Bypass Surgeon practicing for the last 25 yearsDr. Rahul Medakkar Hospital Chief Operating Officer said Mr. Rasiklal has recovered very well and was able to eat on his own the very next day of the surgery and walk and climb the stairs independently. He was discharged on 29th December 2021
