Should You Drink Water After Eating Watermelon? Expert Answers

Summer is here and it is time to stock up on all hydrating foods and fruits. For instance, watermelon, a juicy fruit that is everyone’s favourite, contains 92% of water. In addition, it is packed with nutrients and is a great source of antioxidants. But while watermelon is the most sought after fruit during the summer, it is not free of controversy. Many people believe drinking water after eating watermelon is not safe, especially when it comes to your digestive health. To understand how much of it is true, we spoke to Dr Guru Prasad Das, Senior Dietitian, CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, to get some answers.

Is Drinking Water After Eating Watermelon Safe?

Watermelon contains a high water content, helping to quench thirst and maintain optimal hydration levels. It is rich in vitamins A and C, which support immune function and promote healthy skin. In addition, it is low in calories and high in fibre, making it a nutritious and satisfying snack option.

But have you ever been interrupted when drinking water after eating watermelon? If you have, this is because many believe that drinking water after consuming watermelon may dilute the digestive juices and hinder the digestion process. However, Dr Das said, “There is no scientific evidence to support this claim. The body is capable of efficiently digesting and absorbing nutrients from both watermelon and water simultaneously.”

According to the doctor, drinking water after eating watermelon is generally safe and there are no specific side effects associated with it. However, whether or not you choose to drink water immediately after eating watermelon is a matter of personal preference, he added.

‘You Can Drink Water Whenever You Feel Thirsty’

Dr Das said, “There is no specific recommended waiting time to drink water after eating watermelon. You can drink water whenever you feel thirsty or as per your usual hydration needs. It's important to stay adequately hydrated throughout the day, regardless of when you consume watermelon or any other food.”

“If you have any specific concerns about your digestive health or any other medical conditions, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised advice,” he added.

Why Is It Important To Stay Hydrated?

Our bodies are made up of about 60% water, and water plays a vital role in many bodily functions. Therefore, here are some reasons why staying hydrated is important:

Fluid balance

Water is essential for maintaining the balance of bodily fluids. It helps transport nutrients, oxygen, and waste products throughout the body. Sufficient hydration therefore ensures that your bodily systems function properly.

Optimal physical performance

When you're dehydrated, your physical performance can suffer. Staying hydrated helps maintain proper muscle function, lubricates joints, and regulates body temperature.

Cognitive function

Dehydration can impair cognitive abilities, such as concentration, alertness, and memory.

Digestion and metabolism

Water plays a crucial role in the digestion and absorption of food. Drinking enough water can prevent constipation and promote regular bowel movements.

Skin health

Water is essential for healthy skin. It helps moisturise the skin, maintains elasticity, and promotes a youthful appearance. Dehydration can make the skin dry, flaky, and more prone to wrinkles and other signs of ageing.

Kidney function

The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste products and toxins from the body. Drinking enough water reduces the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

Conclusion

During summer and otherwise, it is generally recommended to drink enough fluids throughout the day, preferably water. The exact amount varies depending on factors such as age, activity level, climate, and overall health. Pay attention to your body's signals of thirst and aim to drink water regularly to maintain hydration levels. More so, you have to consume hydrating fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, and berries.
