Also known as percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. This is done by widening the artery by inserting a tiny balloon at the site and inflating it thereafter. Most of the times, coronary angioplasty is supported with a stent placement to help keep the artery open and reduce the chances of it narrowing again. Two types of stents used are- drug-eluting stents and bare metal stents. The procedure can also be done in case of a heart attack to reduce the amount of heart damage. Blood flow improves after the surgery.
