Laryngectomy is a surgery performed to treat cancer of the thyroid, larynx and other types of throat cancers. In this, the larynx or voice box is removed. A total or partial laryngectomy might be performed depending upon the extent of the larynx that needs to be removed. It is a major operation performed under general anesthesia that takes about 5-7 hours. After the surgery is over, patient breaths through an opening called stoma.
