Lumpectomy is a surgical procedure that helps remove a small cancer or non-cancerous lump in the breast. When a doctor finds a lump in the breast that is determined to be early stage cancer or suspected to be cancerous, it is possible that a lumpectomy surgery will be recommended. In this procedure, the lump along with a small portion of the normal tissue is removed but the shape and appearance of the breast is retained, unlike a mastectomy. In some cases, the doctor may perform a fine needle aspiration biopsy prior to the lumpectomy but in majority cases the tissue removed during this surgery helps confirm or rule out breast cancer. If diagnosis of cancer is confirmed, the patient may need to undergo radiation following the surgery. Lumpectomy surgery in India is the first surgical resort recommended in early stage breast cancer.
