Lung cancer surgery or thoracotomy is the recommended treatment for early stage NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) of the lungs. The procedure usually involves removal of a part of the lung lobes or an entire lobe. Sometimes this could involve removal of a section of trachea or the bronchus. General anaesthesia is administered and the surgery is performed through incisions made on the chest. The extent of the lungs removed depends on the size of the tumour and the extent of its spread. Thoracotomy will require the patient to stay in the lung cancer surgery hospital in India for a few weeks. This procedure is recommended for those suffering from Stage I and II NSCLC. It is usually combined with cryosurgery, a technique used to freeze cancer cells and eliminate them.
