A ventricular assist device, also known as VAD, is a circulatory support device in the form of an implantable mechanical pump used to pump blood from the ventricles to the rest of the body. The device is recommended for patients with weakened hearts or heart failure. There are three main types of VAD-
1) Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)
2) Right ventricular assist device (RVAD)
3) Biventricular assist device (BIVAD)
Most commonly, a VAD is placed in the left ventricle. Although the placement of VAD requires open-heart surgery, it can be a lifesaver for patients suffering from severe heart failure.
