The liver is the only organ in the body that can replace lost or injured tissue (regenerate) Liver Transplant is recommended in cases of Cirrhosis Acute Hepatic Necrosis Biliary Atresia Hepatitis B or C Hepatocellular Carcinoma Genetic Liver Disease Alcoholic Liver Disease Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Partial Hepatectomy Procedure Donor An incision is made in the abdomen The gallbladder is removed The right side of the liver is divided Blood vessels and bile duct are also tied off and divided The right side of the liver is removed Incisions are sutured A drainage tube is placed in the abdomen and sterile bandage or dressing is applied Recipient An incision is made in the abdomen The attached blood vessels and bile duct is clamped to stop blood flow into the diseased liver The diseased liver is removed after it has been cut off from the blood vessels The donor liver is attached to the blood vessels and bile duct The incision is sutured A drainage tube may be placed in the incision site to reduce swelling A sterile bandage or dressing is applied Post Treatment Care Anti-Rejection Medicine will be required to keep the immune system from rejecting the liver The donor and recipient liver will soon grow back to normal size after surgery
