Is the popular DIY flaxseed mask really a Botox dupe?

In the ever-evolving realm of skincare and beauty, do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions often capture our attention, promising natural alternatives to pricey cosmetic procedures. One such contender in the beauty arena is the DIY flaxseed mask, rumoured to be a potential Botox dupe. As the quest for ageless skin persists, enthusiasts and sceptics alike are drawn to explore the efficacy of this homemade remedy.

TikTok and Instagram enthusiasts assert that flaxseed facial masks are a DIY alternative to Botox.

“It’s Botox you make at home, honey. And the best part is it’s two ingredients: flaxseeds and water,” claimed TikToker Victoria Benitez in a viral TikTok with over 6.3 million views.

Benitez extolled flaxseed’s “endless” benefits, massaging the concoction into her skin and hair. According to her, the fatty acids in flaxseed bestow a radiant glow and possess anti-inflammatory properties, reducing redness.

A follow-up TikTok video further asserted that the mask helps produce collagen and boasts anti-ageing properties due to its antioxidants. Despite #flaxseedfacemask garnering over 76,400 views, dermatologists offer mixed opinions on its effectiveness, with some endorsing the hack and others questioning its lasting impact. Benitez admitted she’s not a dermatologist and emphasized that individual skin responses may vary.

Dr. Swapna Priya, consultant dermatologist at CARE Hospitals, explained that though the popular DIY flaxseed mask does offer skin benefits, it doesn’t replicate the effects of Botox, as Botox is a medical procedure that specifically targets and inhibits muscle contractions, resulting in wrinkle reduction.

Influencers have previously been observed applying raw food to their faces. The TikTok trend known as the ‘egg white facial’ gained prominence earlier this year, purporting to assist in the elimination of blackheads from pores. Although flaxseeds, the currently trending ingredient, are frequently employed to enhance digestive health in the wellness sector, aesthetic doctors promptly dismiss the notion that they can eliminate wrinkles in a manner comparable to the effects of Botox.

Dr. Priya noted that flaxseed is indeed good for the skin. Its richness in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties can contribute to skin health. “Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain skin hydration, while antioxidants combat free radicals and inflammation, potentially leading to improved skin texture and reduced signs of ageing,” she tells IndianExpress.com in an interaction.

Beyond skin benefits, incorporating flaxseeds into your routine can positively impact hair health. The omega-3 fatty acids present in flaxseeds are essential for a healthy scalp, potentially reducing issues like dandruff, Dr. Priya explained. Additionally, these fatty acids may strengthen hair and reduce breakage, contributing to overall hair vitality.
