Know what happens to the body if you sit in an AC room all day every day

Air conditioning (AC) is a lifesaver in hot weather, but what happens to your body if you spend all day every day in a cool, conditioned room?

Dr Satish C Reddy, Consultant Pulmonologist at CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, explained the benefits and potential drawbacks of constant AC exposure, along with tips for staying cool and healthy indoors.

AC works its magic by regulating temperature and improving air quality, which can prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration, especially in hot climates. Modern AC systems often include filters that remove dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, improving indoor air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory issues, Dr Reddy said, adding that by reducing humidity and filtering out allergens, AC can help also alleviate symptoms for people with allergies or asthma.

The chilling effects of constant AC

Sitting in a constantly cool room can have several consequences, according to Dr Reddy:

  • Dehydration: AC dries the air, making you lose fluids faster. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Dries everything: Dry air translates to dry skin, itchy eyes, and irritated mucous membranes.
  • Weaker Defenses: Constant cold exposure might weaken your immune system, making you more prone to catching a cold.
  • Breathing Issues: Poorly maintained AC units can harbour mold and allergens, triggering respiratory problems.
  • Stiffness Sets In: Cold temperatures can lead to muscle and joint stiffness, especially if you’re not moving around much.
  • Climate Dependence: Over time, your body might become accustomed to the controlled AC environment, making it difficult to handle natural temperature variations.

How to use the AC judiciously

You don’t need to ditch the AC altogether to stay cool and comfortable. Here are some tips from Dr Reddy to enjoy its benefits while minimising the downsides:

  • Hydration is Key: Drink plenty of water to combat the drying effects of AC.
  • Embrace the Humidifier: Adding moisture back into the air with a humidifier helps prevent dry skin and eyes.
  • Escape the Chill: Take breaks outdoors or in naturally ventilated areas to allow your body to adjust to different temperatures.
  • Cleanliness is Crucial: Regularly clean and maintain your AC system to prevent the growth of dust, mold, and bacteria.
  • Find Your Comfort Zone: Set the AC to a comfortable temperature, not too low, to avoid muscle stiffness and respiratory issues.
  • Moisturise Regularly: Use moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

By following these simple tips, you can create a cool and healthy indoor environment while enjoying the refreshing comfort of air conditioning.
