According to G Sushma, a clinical dietician at CARE Hospitals in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, the right amount of carbohydrate intake might vary depending on characteristics like age, sex, activity level, and general health. “It’s essential to focus on the quality of carbohydrates consumed. Whole, unprocessed sources are generally healthier than refined and processed ones. While individual needs may vary, there isn’t a significant difference in recommended carbohydrate intake between men and women,” Sushma mentioned in conversation with Indian Express

How much carbs can be harmful for your health?

A diet heavy in refined carbs, according to the expert, may increase the risk of cardiovascular problems by lowering HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol and raising triglyceride levels.“Overconsumption of carbohydrates can also contribute to insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels, which are associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes, in turn, is a major risk factor for heart disease,” she continued.

a. Oral Problems: Consuming a lot of sugar, which is frequently linked to consuming a lot of carbohydrates, can aggravate dental conditions like gum disease and cavities.

b. Digestive Issues: People who consume excessive amounts of carbs may have bloating, irregular bowel movements, and digestive discomfort. This is particularly likely if they have a sensitivity to specific types of carbohydrates, such as those present in particular grains or legumes.

c. Elevated Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: A diet steadily rich in carbs, particularly refined carbohydrates, over time may exacerbate insulin resistance and raise the chance of getting type 2 diabetes.
