Bartholin Cyst

Bartholin Cyst Treatment in Hyderabad

A Bartholin cyst is formed due to the blockage of the Bartholin glands located close to the vagina, which subsequently results in the accumulation of fluid and the gland's enlargement. The pain is usually absent in the case of small cysts, whereas, in the case of larger or infected cysts, the pain can be really bad, and the affected person might even have to take days off from work because of that. CARE Hospitals offers the advanced, compassionate, and patient-centered care for women who come in for Bartholin treatment, thus making sure that the problem is dealt with and the patient is soon relieved.

Our expert gynecologists use the most advanced diagnostic methods to thoroughly examine the cyst and suggest the appropriate  treatment for the patient in terms of safety, recovery, and long-term well-being.

What is a Bartholin Cyst?

A Bartholin cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that develops when one of the Bartholin glands—located on either side of the vaginal opening—becomes blocked. The glands produce fluid, which normally lubricates the vaginal area, but duct blockage results in fluid buildup that creates a cyst. Small Bartholin cysts remain unnoticed because they lack pain, but larger or infected cysts create discomfort and pain during walking and sitting, which requires medical treatment.

Bartholin Cyst Symptoms

Symptoms of a Bartholin's cyst depends on its size and whether the cyst is in an infected state. The following are the common Bartholin symptoms noticed by the women:

  • Painless Lump Near the Vaginal Opening: A painless lump that may be small in size, which might have been seen accidentally, as it might not have been painful in the early phases.
  • Pain or Discomfort while Sitting or Walking: As the cyst develops during the time being, the irritation produces the sensation of pain.
  • Redness and Swelling: This could indicate a case of inflammation/infection of the gland and, in some instances, a sensation of warmth in that part.
  • Painful Intercourse: The position of the cyst near the vaginal opening was likely to result in pain during intercourse.
  • Fever or Severe Pain (for Patients with Abscess Formations): Fever or severe pain indicates the presence of serious infections.

Causes of Bartholin Cyst

The following factors can cause a Bartholin cyst to form through obstruction or infection of the Bartholin gland ducts:

  • Obstruction of Bartholin Gland Duct: This condition is when the duct has been obstructed and the fluid manufactured within the gland will not drain properly, thereby leading to the cyst.
  • Bacterial Infection: The infection by common bacteria that include E. coli or sexually transmitted ones leads to inflammation and might progress into a painful abscess.
  • Poor Hygiene: Poor hygiene may enhance bacterial growth around the vaginal areas, increasing the risk for infection and blockage of the ducts.
  •  Trauma or Irritation: Sexual activities, shaving, or procedures causing an injury may irritate or cause friction and swelling, obstructing the duct of the gland.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infection of certain STIs in the gland or tissues around it may increase the possibility of cyst or abscess formation.

Bartholin Cyst Complications

If a Bartholin cyst is untreated, it will likely lead to the following subsequent complications:

  • Bartholin Abscess: The cyst can become infected and may fill entirely with pus, causing severe pain, swelling, fever, and the need to have the cyst drained.
  • Severe Pain and Mobility Issues: A larger size of the cyst or an abscess can also cause many painful sensations during sitting, walking, or doing routine work.
  • Recurrence of Cysts: The blockage in the Bartholin gland can possibly lead to a high level of recurrence over time, especially if recurrent infections take place, leading to recurrent cysts.
  • Spread of Infection: Very rarely, the infection could spread to the surrounding areas, leading to conditions like cellulitis, and hence, seeking medical attention is very crucial.
  • Impact on Sexual Health: This lingering pain and ache can result in discomfort while performing intercourse and give rise to emotional factors.

Bartholin Cyst Treatment Options

The treatment for a Bartholin’s cyst is based on the size, symptoms, discomfort level, presence, or absence of infection, as well as an abscess. Bartholin’s cysts often disappear on their own, but in certain circumstances, treatment is necessary.

  • Observation (Watchful Waiting): Small, painless cysts without signs of infection usually do not need treatment. Warm sitz baths and proper genital hygiene can promote drainage and healing.
  • Sitz Baths: Taking warm water baths (sitz baths) several times a day for 3 or 4 days can help reduce discomfort. This method can even allow a small infected cyst to rupture spontaneously.
  • Medications: Pain-relieving drugs may be administered to help deal with pain. Antibiotics may be considered if there is evidence of infection, abscess, or the presence of a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Incision and Drainage (I&D): “For larger painful and/or infected cysts, a minor surgical procedure may be performed to drain the fluid/pus accumulation.” This procedure may be done with local anesthesia/sedation.
  • Word Catheter Placement: Following drainage, a rubber tube catheter, which should remain in place for a number of weeks, may be inserted. Its function would be to keep the duct open, facilitate drainage, and prevent a relapse.
  • Marsupialization: When the frequency of recurrence of cysts is continuous and creates some sort of discomfort, the doctor may recommend surgery with a procedure called marsupialization. It involves a small permanent opening created to enable long-term drainage of the fluid and to prevent the recurrent formation of such cysts.
  • Complete Excision of Bartholin Gland (Rare): In rare cases, the removal of the Bartholin gland may be performed if there are other conditions such as the recurrence of a cyst that cannot be treated through other methods.
