Advanced Stapedectomy Surgery

Generally, the communication and our responses rely on our ability to hear. Otosclerosis, a condition that affects the small bones (stapes) of your middle ear, can gradually impair your hearing. Stapedectomy is a type of microsurgery that replaces the stapes bone with a prosthesis to restore hearing.

At CARE Hospitals we have expert ENT surgeons and advanced technology for stapedectomy surgery. We provide safe and effective stapedectomy surgeries and help patients regain improved levels of hearing and confidence while they live their everyday lives.

Why Choose CARE Hospitals for Stapedectomy Surgery in Hyderabad?

Choosing the CARE Hospitals significantly influences surgical precision and hearing outcomes. CARE Hospitals is equipped with:

  • Experienced ENT surgeons expertized in otologic microsurgery
  • Advanced operating microscopes and endoscopic ear surgery technology
  • Comprehensive audiological evaluation and diagnostics
  • Personalized surgical planning

What is Stapedectomy?

Stapedectomy is a type of microsurgery performed in the middle ear to correct hearing loss resulting from otosclerosis (a condition where the stapes become immobile and hence vibrate poorly or not at all) due to reduced sound conduction to the inner ear.

In stapedectomy, the immobilized stapes are either partly or fully removed and replaced by a very small prosthetic device that improves sound conduction to the inner ear.

The goal of stapedectomy is therefore to:

  • Provide a corrected form of conductive hearing loss.
  • Improve sound from the middle ear to the inner ear, and hence restore sound transmission.
  • Reduce the overall reliance on hearing aids (where clinically indicated).
  • Improve overall clarity of hearing.

Stapedectomy Indications

Stapedectomy surgery is recommended in patients with:

  • Conductive Hearing Loss (Otosclerosis): Stapedectomy surgery becomes necessary when hearing loss exists because the stapes bone has become fixed through otosclerosis, which hinders the transmission of sound to the inner ear.
  • Progressive Hearing Loss: The need for stapedectomy surgery arises when a patient experiences progressive hearing loss, which shows continuous deterioration after receiving basic medical treatment.
  • Intact Eardrum with Stapes Fixation: The stapedectomy procedure can be performed on patients who have a normal eardrum and their stapes bone remains fixed in place.
  • Significant Air-Bone Gap on Audiometry: A significant difference in air and bone conduction on audiometry tests confirms conductive hearing loss, which requires surgical intervention.
  • Trouble Hearing Conversations: Patients with difficulty hearing conversations even after medical treatment may require surgical intervention.

The ENT surgeons will perform a complete ENT examination together with a thorough audiometric assessment before they can determine whether a patient qualifies for stapedectomy surgery.

Stapedectomy Procedure

Pre-operative preparation, the procedure, and post-operative care are all part of the stapedectomy procedure and are detailed in the following:

  • Preparation: Surgical preparation involves tests of hearing, examinations of the ears & overall health, and possibly imaging studies (only in specific situations).
  • During the Stapedectomy: During the procedure, local or general anesthesia is given; the operation will be done via the external auditory canal, without being opened externally; all the ossicles will be tried to remain intact; the immobilized stapes bone is removed; the prosthetic is added to restore sound conduction back to the cochlea, and packing to promote healing in the ear is completed. Stapedectomy surgery time is approximately 60 to 90 minutes. A stapedectomy procedure includes the following steps:
    • Elevated eardrum
    • Removed immobilized stapes bone
    • Placed prosthetic
    • Sealed and re-elevated/elevated eardrum
  • After Stapedectomy: The patient can expect to return home on the same day or shortly after the procedure. Patients may experience some degree of mild unsteadiness or dizziness immediately following the stapedectomy, but the discomfort usually is temporary and resolves in a few days.

Recovery from Stapedectomy

It generally takes two to four weeks for patients to recover after a stapedectomy. During the recovery period, patients should avoid activities such as heavy lifting, blowing their noses, and getting their ears wet. As the swelling goes down, patients can expect to see gradual improvements in their hearing abilities.

Risks of Stapedectomy

There might be some possible risks regardless of how safe a surgical procedure is. Here are some risks associated with this surgery:

  • Dizziness: After surgery, patients may feel dizzy (impaired balance) or as if they are spinning (vertigo) for a few days due to inner ear adjustment.
  • Mild Discomfort in the Ear: Some patients may experience mild discomfort in the ear that has been operated on, such as pain, pressure, or fullness in the ear during the early healing process.
  • Taste Disturbance: After surgery there can be a temporary change in the taste of certain foods because of the position of the taste nerve; however, your taste should improve shortly after your surgery.
  • Temporary Fluctuation in Hearing: After surgery, patients find that their hearing may fluctuate and will not stabilize until they have healed completely.

Stapedectomy Complications

Serious complications related to stapedectomy are very rare; however, these rare complications might include:

  • Loss of sensorineural hearing: This rare complication can occur in cases where damage to the inner ear results in complete loss of hearing in the ear that underwent surgery.
  • Continuous vertigo: Continuous dizziness or balancing difficulties could happen due to surgery complications.
  • Displacement of a prosthesis: Prostheses that are placed during surgery sometimes shift from their original position after placement (very rarely).
  • Infection: Infections are very rare after surgery; however, they can present and require intervention.
  • Tinnitus: A persistent ringing/buzzing sound in the ear could be the result of surgery.

Patients who have undergone stapedectomy with experienced surgeons and appropriate follow-up care will experience no major complications from their stapedectomy. The above-discussed complications are very rare and might occur only in very few cases.

Conclusion

With advanced ENT expertise and modern surgical techniques, CARE Hospitals provides safe and precise stapedectomy surgery in Hyderabad. Stapedectomy Surgery Hospitals in India

Frequently Asked Questions

No, the stapedectomy is a form of microsurgery and can be performed at a hospital outpatient facility using minimally invasive techniques with good outcomes.  The operation is usually done as a same-day surgery or overnight stay and has a very low complication rate when performed by an expert ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon.

The most common side effects are dizziness following surgery, mild discomfort for several weeks, or changes in taste sensation for several days after surgery.

The majority of people who undergo stapedectomy receive long-term improvement in their hearing and will keep their improvement for years or possibly for their entire lifetime.

Although stapedectomy can be performed safely by experienced ENT surgeons, there are rare events that could happen, including hearing loss and/or vertigo.

Candidates for stapedectomy are those individuals diagnosed with otosclerosis and conductive hearing loss with normal inner ear function.

Recovery time varies from patient to patient; however, most patients will return to their normal daily activities within 2-4 weeks of having their surgery.

You will have an initial recovery of about 2 weeks before you see full healing with stabilization. Complete recovery might take up to an additional 4-6 weeks.

You should avoid blowing your nose, lifting weights, making any sudden movements with your head, flying, or getting any water in your ear until your doctor informs you that it is allowed.

You may begin to notice an improvement in your hearing a few weeks after you have the packing removed from your ear but will continue to see improvements as you heal.
