Though bananas are considered energy boosters and pregnant women can eat bananas but there are certain known side effects, and as a mother-to-be, you would not want to take any risks.

1. Gestational Diabetes

Bananas are a sugar bomb for women with a high risk of diabetes. This is also known as gestational diabetes, which rises during pregnancy and vanishes after you have given birth. You might try other fruits if you are craving them, like black grapes during pregnancy. 

2. Latex Fruit Syndrome

A Banana contains latex allergens which cause body temperature to rise, which is not good for developing foetuses, especially in the third trimester. Due to this, the foetus is more prone to cardiovascular diseases. 

3. Can Trigger Migraine

The content of tyramine in bananas can cause migraines. Also, they contain an amino acid that is turned into tyramine by the body and might lead to headaches. The migraines, if not treated properly, can be a complication for the mother.

4. Hyperkalemia

Bananas have a high content of potassium in it. Though potassium is considered to be beneficial for the mother as well as the foetus, if eaten in excess quantities, it can cause hyperkalemia. Potassium also aids in the operation of nerves and neurons. Hence, excess potassium can lead to a heart attack.

5. Tooth Decay

Teeth are very sensitive, but during pregnancy, these become more delicate as the tissues around the gums loosen. This is due to the hormone changes during pregnancy. Due to their high starch quantity, bananas have the potential to cause dents in the teeth. 

6. Constipation

The carbohydrate content in bananas is very high as they contain glucose, sucrose, and fructose. It also contains tannic acid, which is known to cause constipation, which can be harmful to both mother and the baby. 

7. Acid Reflux

If a banana is taken on an empty stomach, it might cause acidity and bowel issues. Acidity can cause severe complications and might affect the baby indirectly. It is better to avoid bananas if there is the slightest chance of acidity. 

8. Drowsiness

Due to their high content of Vitamin B6, bananas promote sleepiness and drowsiness. Vitamin B6 promotes the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, which results in melatonin, which modulates the sleep-wake loop. As a result, the more bananas you eat, the sleepier you become.

9. GIT disorder

Any nutrients out of the limit can cause abdominal damage. Bananas have a good amount of fiber which helps in digestion. However, too many digestives can cause problems such as bloating and cramping. 

How Many Bananas Should One Eat During Pregnancy?

A moderate amount won’t do any harm. But excess consumption might lead to unknown complications. Hence, you can eat 2-3 bananas a week. 

Bananas are low in calories and fat but rich in potassium, magnesium, manganese, vitamin B6, Dietary fibre, copper, and fibre folate. However, doctors do not usually recommend bananas during pregnancy as they contain furocoumarin, which is found in many fruits and vegetables to protect them from insects. This chemical can harm the baby in the womb along with the mother. Hence, it is not recommended to eat bananas during pregnancy.

It is better to avoid bananas if you are allergic to certain minerals or have acidity. Always be in touch with your doctor or dietitian, as they might help you with a better diet plan or chart.

Having pineapple during pregnancy is not considered safe and is best to avoid during the first trimester. This is because consuming pineapple can lead to sharp uterine contractions, which can cause miscarriage. 


Papaya is rich in latex and can cause the uterus to contract, leading to miscarriage and bleeding. It can also impair the foetus’ development. 

Frozen Berries

Berries, when frozen, lose their nutrients and can be toxic for you and your baby. Always include fresh fruits and berries in your diet. It is healthier and best for your health.
