Bariatric Surgery Benefits Besides Helping You Lose Weight

9 April

Bariatric surgery is suggested by doctors for weight loss. The surgery involves changes in the digestive system to lose weight. It is usually performed when diet and exercise do not work and when there are serious health conditions that require the patient to lose weight.

While there are many benefits of bariatric surgery, it can also have side effects rarely. After the surgery, one has to have a balanced diet and need exercise regularly that will help in the success of the bariatric surgery.

Types of bariatric surgery

The types of bariatric surgeries are Laparoscopic Gastric bypass, Sleeve gastrectomy. Each type of bariatric surgery is different.

Gastric bypass is the most common where the working is decreasing the amount of food and reducing the absorption of nutrients. The surgeon cuts the top of the stomach as a result the outcome is the pouch becomes smaller and can hold less food.

In Sleeve gastrectomy, 80% stomach will be removed and leave a long tube-like pouch. This cannot hold much food. This also produces less hormone called ghrelin which is an appetite-regulating hormone so the desire to eat becomes less. This requires a shorter hospital stay, unlike the other procedures.

Bariatric surgery is done mainly to lose weight, especially where there is a risk of life-threatening health conditions due to excess weight.

Some of them are:

  • Heart stroke and disease
  • High blood pressure

The surgery is only done when there is no improvement in weight loss even after diet and exercise.

The procedure of the surgery

  • The surgery is done in the hospital using general anesthesia so that you are unconscious during the surgical procedure. The surgical specification depends on each individual and the type of weight loss.
  • Today with advanced science and technology, the surgery is laparoscopically performed. This is a small tubular instrument with a camera attached. The laparoscope is inserted in the abdomen through the small incisions. The camera helps the surgeon to see and operate inside the abdomen.
  • The recovery is faster in laparoscopic surgery but it is not suitable for all.
  • After the surgery, you will be transferred to the recovery room where you are monitored for any complications. You may have to stay a few days in the hospital which depends on the procedure.

After the procedure

After the surgery for one or two days, you are not allowed to eat so that the stomach and the intestine can heal. Then the specific diet will be instructed which usually begins with liquids then soft foods and later regular food. There may have many restrictions or limits on how much and what you can eat and drink. There will be a few medical checkups and also laboratory tests.

Gastric bypass and other bariatric surgeries provide long-term weight loss which depends on the surgery and also changes in lifestyle habits. Other than the weight loss gastric bypass surgery also improve other health conditions like

Conclusion

After the surgery, it is very essential to follow all the instructions given by the doctor. The surgery will be effective when the instructions are followed accurately. Following regular physical activity and food habits are very important to avoid any further health problems.
