Five tips for healthy eyes

Updated on 18 August 2022

The Eyes are one of the most sensitive organs that we possess. Due to increased screen time, pollution and unhealthy lifestyles, poor eye health has become a common problem. Impaired vision can hamper basic daily chores and affect the quality of life. Hence, it is crucial to take the utmost care of our eyes.

Five Tips To Keep You Healthy

Here are 5 tips that will help in keeping your eyes healthy,

1. Eat healthily!

Like any other organ, the eyes also need daily nourishment through proper food intake. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A & C and zinc, improves eye health. Food items like fish, broccoli, carrots, legumes, spinach, leafy greens, nuts, and citrus fruits are rich in the necessary nutrients and keep your eye health in check.

2. Take Frequent Breaks From The Computer Screen

Most digital device users experience eye discomfort due to computer vision syndrome (CVS). CVS is characterized by eyestrain, dryness, and fatigue.

Therefore, it is crucial to take short breaks from the screen, approximately every 20 minutes, as it helps in relieving the strain. Hydrating your eyes by using eye drops, being consistent in doing some basic eye-strengthening exercises and using blue-light glasses can also help reduce eye fatigue.

3. Quit Smoking

Smoking can cause many complexities. One of which is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD affects the retina and causes loss of central vision. Regular smoking also increases the risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma. Therefore, giving it up well in time can be bliss not only for your lungs but also for your eyes.

4. Go For Regular Checkups

According to The Economic Times, 550 million Indians are in dire need of vision correction. But only 1 in 5 go for an eye checkup. Even without the complaint of any eye issues, a regular checkup with an ophthalmologist ensures healthy vision and detects eye disorders before they aggravate beyond easy treatment.

5. Wear Sunglasses

Apart from the fashion element of wearing sunglasses, they also help to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV light. UV light increases the chances of premature ageing of the eye, macular degeneration, and cataract. Wearing sunglasses, especially when directly exposed to the sun for long durations, can drastically decrease the chances of developing such diseases.

Besides the above precautions, getting adequate sleep, maintaining a moderate fitness regime, and adjusting the level of lighting are also important factors to consider.

As unhealthy lifestyle factors are going beyond our realm of control, taking care of the eyes should be as much of a priority as the rest of your health. Following these simple tips will go a long way to help your eyes remain safe and healthy.
