Health Importance of Indian Herbs

Updated on 18 August 2022

Knowledge about the therapeutic, toxicological effect of plants, minerals and other herbs goes back all the way to prehistoric times when people migrated to the Indian subcontinent. Today most herbs found in the Indian subcontinent are key elements in the alternative medicine system called Ayurveda and Ayurveda rests on an underlying belief, “What heals, also prevents.” Herbs effective in treating specific conditions can also provide targeted nourishment to specific potential diseases and physiological systems. Following are some important benefits of Indian herbs that are crucial ingredients for natural remedies.

1. Improves Heart Health

The underlying cause for most heart problems is atherosclerosis, a condition that causes a build-up of plaque in your arteries, limiting the flow of oxygenated blood to your heart, hence resulting in heart attacks. A lot of India-based and overseas research has shown that primary Indian herbs like cardamom, turmeric, cinnamon, garlic and coriander help control LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglyceride and blood sugar levels. This results in lower blood pressure, lower risk of blood clots, and prevention of diabetes, all of which are a gateway to heart disease and stroke.

2. Reduces Risk of Cancer

Turmeric is known as an anti-cancer herb as it contains a compound called Curcumin, which inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that further help treat infections. Ashwagandha has a steroidal compound that has the ability to kill cancerous cells without harming normal ones. The Holy Basil (Tulsi), Ginger and Neem are known to prevent cancer by increasing antioxidant activity, killing cancer cells and preventing the spread of cancer to other cells. Laboratory trials of ‘amla’ extracts have shown their ability to kill and prevent the growth of cancer cells while not harming healthy cells.

3. Improves Immunity

Indian herbs have powerful anti-oxidant properties that induce biological processes that enable our bodies to have a normal immune response after exposure to antigens. The herb Neem cleanses our blood of any toxins and fights fungi, viruses and bacteria. Ashwagandha and Tulsi are both known to decrease blood sugar and cortisol levels, reduce inflammation, and improve cognitive functioning. They also promote energy and stamina without stimulating the heart. Both turmeric and ginger can also decrease levels of inflammation, which can help improve immune function. There is a good amount of vitamin C in Amla which increases the immunity power in the body and helps the body and mind adapt to the stress of modern life and promotes increased energy levels.

Today research shows that herbs, taken in proper form and compositions, have numerous health benefits. They help maintain overall long-term health, boost immunity, support mental health, clarity and focus, calm the nerves, improve digestion and other gastro problems, protect the body from toxins and support the detoxification and innate healing processes.‍
